· Annual General Meeting to be held Saturday, Feb. 11 at 10:00 am

Heritage
Designation Proposal and Vote This proposal will presented and
discussed and voted on at the AGM on Feb 11th. The AGM meeting will start
at 10:00 Anyone with new information or other comments about the negative
or positive impact of designation should forward this information to church
secretary, Susan Cox at tilliecox2008@gmail.com. She will
collate and add to the Q & A info package that will be distributed before
the meeting.

Robbie
Burns Lunch, Sunday 29 Jan- Knox will be hosting a Robbie Burns Lunch
on Sunday January 29th at 1230. Lunch will include
Haggis. Tickets for members of Knox and Limehouse are by donation.
· Georgetown Bread Basket - if you are thinking of making a
donation to the Georgetown Bread Basket this month, the items in most need are
drink boxes for students, individual pudding cups (preferably Chocolate);
Pancake Mix; Ketchup and Sugar. Items can be dropped at the food bank or at
Knox and they will be delivered for you.

for this Week

For
the victims of all manner of violence, inflicted by strangers they have never
met, or even intimate partners and loved ones

For
those struggling to come to terms with themselves and their identity (in every dimension
that word engages!)
For those struggling to make ends meet, those who have
just given up trying, and those endeavouring to help, somehow, some way
·
For
those who find it so hard to reach out, and find themselves praying the letters
so that God can make the words!

Robert Burns (1759-1796)
Robbie Burns was a
poet and lyricist. He was born in Alloway, Ayshire He is often considered to be
the national poet of Scotland. Some of his poems are also songs, some of the
more well-known songs include: Auld Lang Syne, Scots Wha Hae, and A Man’s a Man
for A’ That (the tune for which is played to pipe in the haggis). He wrote in
both Scots and English. He only lived to be 37, but fathered 12 children (five
of whom survived infancy).
The Scots Language
Scots is one of the
three languages spoken in Scotland along with English and Gaelic. Scots is a
Germanic language, that diverged from Middle English. It is the closest language
to English and is theoretically mutually intelligible with English, while the
grammar is the same as English, there are many words that are unrecognizable.
Scots has only recently gained widespread acceptance. The langue was for a long
time in many parts of Scotland persecuted because it was felt by many to be bad
English. The exception to this of course was Robbie Burns Day when it was
celebrated. It is mostly spoken in Scotland (primarily in the Lowlands and
Northern Isles) and Northern Ireland
