Reverend Peter Barrow update April 30, 2015

Good morning, all.

I just heard from Peter’s daughter that he is up, taking short walks around ICU and hobnobbing with anyone who will chat with him – sounds exactly like the Peter we know and love, right?  Well, he’s still waiting on blood tests and there’s one other item that they are hoping to have clear up before they can proceed any further on the road to any kind of surgery.

However, an email address has been set up to allow him to receive messages!  So, should anyone feel so moved, please address anything to peterbarrow32@outlook.com and he should get it forthwith!  I have apologized in advance for any flood of message that may come his way – he doesn’t actually get them personally, but his daughters read them to him (please take that into account when you are writing anything).

I hope this brightens your day, at least a little bit.

In Christ,
Rev. Steve

MOMENT FOR MISSION: Sunday April 26

April 25 – World Malaria Day

Malaria is one of Africa’s most severe health challenges and one of its most prevalent childhood diseases. Presbyterian World Service & Development is working to reduce the incidence of malaria by teaching communities how to prevent the spread. Community leaders are taking an active role in teaching about prevention and control of malaria. By teaching people how to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds and how to properly use and care for bed nets that provide protection while sleeping, communities are seeing fewer cases of the disease. When someone does contract malaria, volunteers know how to respond quickly with medical care in order to ensure fewer people die as a result of the disease.

PWS&D supports communities fighting malaria.

MOMENT FOR MISSION: April 22 – Earth Day
Maria de los Angeles used to depend on purchasing expensive produce at the market in order to feed her family. All that has changed now because of a Presbyterian World Service & Development program which works to help farmers in her region end hunger by planting new types of fruits and vegetables and diversifying diets. The program is also ensuring that farmers know how to deal with Nicaragua’s often-dry climate. Maria has learned how to collect and recycle leaves to help trap moisture in the soil and make organic fertilizers. This resourcefulness is allowing Maria and other farmers like her to succeed. Maria is careful to give back what she takes, by helping to nurture her small piece of land by planting new trees and using environmentally sustainable farming techniques—and sharing this knowledge with her children and community to help ensure better futures for all.
PWS&D helps farmers care for creation

Leader:        The Lord be with you.

All:              And also with you.

Leader:        Lift up your hearts.

All:              We lift them up to the Lord.

Leader:        Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

All:              It is right to give God thanks and praise.

(The prayer begins by approaching the aspect of God as Creator, Father, Life-giver, being thankful for all that we have been given, especially the gift of Jesus Christ.  The segment concludes with words to the effect of…)

Leader:        We join with the whole creation to lift our hearts in joyful praise, saying together…

All:    Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might,

Heaven and earth are full of your glory.

          Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

(The prayer continues, with a focus now on Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Redeemer, and how He gave us the communion meal to unify us in one heart, one spirit, and one faith.  This segment concludes as…)

Leader:        We proclaim the mystery of faith, saying:

All:              Christ has died.

Christ has risen.

Christ will come again.

We come to the final segment of the prayer, addressing the Holy Spirit, moving from thankfulness for what has been done to intercessions regarding what may yet be.  A time of silent supplication may mark this time, after which we conclude with The Lord’s Prayer (debts).

Hear us as we pray boldly with the words that He taught us as we say together, Our Father…Amen.
